By KBM Fabrics | Los Angeles Fashion District
The Los Angeles Fashion District is home to the largest selection of textiles in the United States. With nearly 200 wholesale and retail fabric stores packed into just a few city blocks, it's a paradise for designers, sewists, costume makers, and anyone who works with fabric.
But with so many options, it can be overwhelming — especially if it's your first time visiting. This guide will help you navigate the district, find the best fabrics, and make the most of your trip.
Where Is the LA Fashion District?
The fabric shopping hub is located in Downtown Los Angeles, roughly bounded by 8th Street to the north, Olympic Boulevard to the south, Maple Avenue to the west, and San Julian Street to the east. Most of the best fabric stores are concentrated along Maple Avenue and the surrounding blocks.
If you're looking for a great starting point, KBM Fabrics at 1732 Maple Avenue is right in the heart of the district. We've been manufacturing and supplying premium knit and woven textiles for over 40 years, with many of our knit fabrics spun in-house right here in Los Angeles.
What Makes the Fashion District Special?
You won't find this kind of variety anywhere else in the country. The Fashion District offers:
- Every type of fabric imaginable — from everyday cotton and linen to exotic silks, selvedge denim, French terry, fleece, jersey knits, lyocell (Tencel), rayon, and more
- Wholesale and retail pricing — many stores sell by the yard at wholesale prices, even to individual shoppers
- Trims, notions, and supplies — buttons, zippers, thread, elastic, interfacing, and every sewing supply you could need
- Specialty fabrics — bridal, upholstery, costume, activewear, and sustainable textiles
Tips for Shopping the Fashion District
1. Bring Cash
Many stores in the Fashion District are cash only. While ATMs are available throughout the district, it's best to come prepared. Some stores do accept cards, but cash will give you the smoothest experience — and sometimes better prices.
2. Know the Difference: Wholesale vs. Retail
Some stores are wholesale-only (marked "solo mayoreo") and require minimum purchases. Others sell retail by the yard. At KBM Fabrics, we sell both wholesale and retail — whether you need 1 yard or 10,000 yards, we've got you covered.
3. Start on Maple Avenue
Maple Avenue is the main artery for fabric shopping. Start here and work your way outward. You'll find the highest concentration of quality fabric stores within a few blocks of Maple.
4. Touch Everything
One of the biggest advantages of shopping in person versus online is being able to feel the fabric. Check the weight, drape, stretch, and texture before you buy. If you're not sure what you need, ask — store staff in the district are incredibly knowledgeable.
5. Come Early
Most stores open between 9:00 and 9:30 AM. The district gets busier as the day goes on, especially on weekdays. Coming early gives you the best selection and more one-on-one time with staff.
